A quick look at the life and times of Lachit Borphukan and his glorious contribution to the Ahom Kingdom of Assam
Lachit Borphukan – The Hero of Assam
When we think of the resistance to Mughal rule in India, the names that come to mind are Shivaji and Rana Pratap. However, a relatively lesser-known figure from Assam by the name of Lachit Borphukan deserves a place in the illustrious list of native heroes. Lachit first displayed his military genius, when he recovered Guwahati from the Mughals in 1667. For this brilliant victory, he was presented with the Hengdang, a gold-plated sword by Raja Chakradhwaj Singha. This victory was his first major win against the Mughals but certainly not his last or most glorious. The short video gives an account of the contribution of Lachit Borphukan to Indian History, conveying how he played a vital role in the preservation of Assamese culture from the invading Mughal armies.
